The Federal Government said yesterday the six Nigerians detained in Cape Verdehave been released.
A report said the six tourists were held by Cape Verdean authorities for entering the country without much funds.
But this has been debunked.Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the tourists travelled to Cape Verde for holiday and were detained for allegations of trafficking, which is false.
Ebienfa said in an update: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that the Nigerian nationals (ladies) detained in Cape Verde have been released.
“The ministry engaged Cape Verdean authorities via our mission in Guinea Bissau to secure their release. The tourists travelled to Cape Verde for holiday and were detained for allegations of trafficking which turned out to be false.”
Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had called for release of the tourists.
Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, director of Media, Publicity and Protocol, appealed to Cape Verde that the tourists be treated with respect and put on the next flight to Dakar for connection back to Nigeria.
